"The people who chose this are bunch of retards." was the first thing I said when I saw that list, especially the marden list.
Does that mean girls can handle that better than I would? Not everyone.
I know this is my first formal complaint to any authority. But am I any different from anyone who doesn't speak up? No. I just have a reason- that I am not yet in any military service, therefore no one can court-martial me for what I say. Also, I still have my parents on my side.
my message to all? Just stand up for what you believe in.
So why do I do this?
- You might think that I'm afraid of "yellow slips". I'm not. They just teach me a good lesson to swear less. Besides, all they do is waste my time.
- It's the most meaningful thing I can do in Year 10. Make these people explain how they do this stuff.
- I don't know if this spirit will live through boot camp.

My reaction was of astonishment. "Who's in?"
My subconsciously expects myself to be chosen, but neither not I unhappy about it. I had previously (just a few days ago) made up my mind to decline to be a prefect. Perhaps it seemed to "official"; I would rather be student representative in such a case, as I would be representing students, whom I am one, rather than to be the pawn of some external decision-maker. I do not think that I would enjoy to be instructed by a ruling power, instead of the majority, who would be affected the most.
Maybe in the future I would regret this (as something that I could add on my future CV), but as far as I am concerned, neither of us can influence the choice made here. What we can do is to predict the implications of this.
Will "Shadow Prefecting" make those that are more responsible? I would say that half of those chosen would currently not fit my ideal of a prefect. Or is this deliberate; to give the moderates (or those not extreme) such responsibilities to make them more responsible? Or even, that responsibility is not (heavily) needed?
Still, what concerns me the most is of the form-bias. Only 4/10 of the (shadow) prefects come from 10M2. Allright, the difference isn't much, but among those chosen - in my opinion - are a few that are ill-suited to take up such a post. Yet, this has but to make me sigh at this desination, which is - ultimately - only symbolic.
P.S. A simple google search of "Shadow Prefect" yields only 4 results, of which none are relevant. Yahoo was slightly better, with 9 results, but none too were relevant.
Whoever who chose the prefects chose none of the boys in 10M1.
What do you these people were chosen? 78 out of the assumed 210 (which is the maximum) gives 37%. So statistically you get over a 1 in 3 chance to be a shadow prefect. But for 10M, only 1 out of 13 boys got chosen as a shadow prefect.
Perhaps there was a criteria. It is safe to say that there is none with a very bad reputation chosen.
With all this looked upon so negatively, is it because we may have become too proud?
Well, not everyone is that negative.
I doubt anyone would care about doing those duties. Look at what happened to the classroom monitor stuff...
I don't think the form bias thing is all that important. 10M1 and 10M2 are the same. (Like Tucker says in RvB, Red and Blue are the same, stop this crazy war!) Class isn't all that important. Personnally, I think it was just coincidence that only Timothy was the only guy (previously) chosen. How good is Donovan anyways?
I think you won't regret it for most of the time, unless you do have to do a CV. But they won't look this far back to Year 10, unlike what the ICT thing seemed to say.
You know what? I think you are too neutral. Stop attacking both sides at once and choose a side to stand at.
I do think there are some people who are pretty bad for the job, but there is no real power held by these people. So there's no real danger.
I think you're regretting it already. Calm down. There are many more things you can do that will make more difference to this.
You think I'm proud of it? I'm not for being a prefect, but only for being able to make a difference.
You may not have known it, but I now know that there has been abuses of power already by shadow prefects. Have you not heard Henry boasting how he argued with a younger student who happended to cross him? Hopefully this is just an isolated case, since not all shadow prefects have Henry's personality.
On the matter of responsibility, I believe someone will fail to do their duty. What else is there more than one prefect at every venue?
Thanks for reasurring me; I feel much better now after you write about the minor importance of shadow prefecting now in a future CV.
But for myself, power corrupts. I have been a prefect before in P5 and about those that I have written names (a very small number) about (which includes Natasha and Ariel), in retrospect they were more "politically" motivated (in the sense that I had to object to their "strange" acts viewed by my social group). Of course this is only something very minor, it never went to a higher level.
It is true that once you have power, you can use it in both good and bad ways. But if you want to harass someone (eg. insult someone or even beat someone up), you don't need the power of a prefect. From looking at the current prefects they have virtually no respectable power.
(We still have a firefox 1.5 banner at the bottom of the blog's page, even though it's already at 2.0!)
yes...you know what I'm planning to do...skip some duties or turn up 10 minutes by period 3.
You can't abuse the prefect power thing. People will just tell on you and then, you're busted.
Do I want to stop someone take food out of the 5 th floor? No. That's what I believe in. But I will allow people to stuff all the crap into their mouths before getting out.
No exceptions. Even prefects will get stopped.
My prefered place will of course, be the D24 computer room.
