Soylent Adventures: Nutraloaf

While researching Soylent, I came across this stuff.
This abomination is the food equivalent of punishment. It's what's fed to inmates in solitary confinement cells of US prisons.

Nutraloaf has lots of different recipes. The only commonality is that they are all supposed to look disgusting while still being nutritious.

Here's one I'd like to try.
  • 6 slices Whole Wheat Bread, finely chopped
  • 4 ounces Non-dairy Cheese, finely grated
  • 4 ounces Raw Carrots, finely grated
  • 12 ounces Spinach, canned, drained
  • 4 ounces Seedless Raisins
  • 2 cups Great Northern Beans, cooked and drained
  • 4 tablespoons Vegetable Oil
  • 6 ounces Tomato Paste
  • 8 ounces Milk, powdered, instant nonfat/skim
  • 6 ounces Potato Flakes, dehydrated
I wonder what that tastes like... kind of reminds me of FT!

Hypothesis:

From the looks of it, I believe it boils down to Tomato, Spinach, Cheese and Milk, which appear to be the ingredients most likely to dominate the taste. I know tomato, cheese and milk taste something like puke, and vomit with anything else tastes, well, like vomit. So I'd say it's a tasteless mass with a puke aftertaste.

Of course, in real life, it could be far worse, probably depending on some chef's mood...

Experiment:

Upcoming! I am planning on scaling down the recipe by 6, hopefully reducing the result to  a trial size horror!

To be Continued....

The Sound of Silence

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaSFzp6IDgw

Enjoy...the sound of silence...and its many interpretations*.

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools", said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written
on the subway walls And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence
